Anyone who has done genealogical
research, for any length of time can look back on the days when they
first started out, and all their family information fit into one neat
little notebook. Years later, it has taken over one whole room, filled
many bookshelves, and more often than not, has spilled over into a
multitude of storage boxes leading down a hall. It gets that way,
because one little piece of information leads to another, leads to
another and soon you have connections and cross references going every
which direction, and each new find develops into a new piece of
documentation. |

Basically, the same is true for
heraldry. Heraldry after all was a means of keeping track of people and
also documenting their station in life, i.e., Bishop, Lord Mayor, Baron.
At one point in order to own land, one had to have an arms that was
recognized by an authority. Son could not inherit property from his
father, without first showing or proving he had a grant of arms. With
each grant of arms especially with the nobles, was a lineage that had to
be documented. Often this documentation, was just the mention of the
people involved and why a particular arms design may have been changed
from what it had been previously. It could be the death of a parent, an
assumption of a name because no heirs were left, or a marriage where the
bride’s father insisted upon the use of his arms. In any case a lot of
information can be gleaned which can lead you to another, name another
arms, another family, a clan connection, a tartan association and so on. |

Our nominal membership fees give

of researching the arms designs. We have incorporated all information
from all of the different resources with the arms and the original
record in our database wherever we can. We are constantly updating our
database. No piece of information is too small to ignore. Some names
will not have any arms associated with them, but we have found an origin
for the name so we include it in our records. It may be important to
that one person who shares that same name. |
